today i was able to spend a few hours going through all the curriculum and plan our first few weeks of school. benny will be starting 3rd grade and june will begin preschool.
i plan to keep things light and fun for june but still introduce her to some early learning skills. she wants to do “school” too, so i am just taking her lead on this. for june i plan on doing the all about pre-reading program and the before five and a row for literature. we will also do some early math activities but i do not have curriculum for this but will use manipulatives and a few other resources i have collected over the years. we will also be working on fine motor activities that keep her busy as i work with benny and will help her in the future when she begins handwriting.
benny will be doing very similar work as he did at the classical academy where he attended the last three years. i have been very happy with the curriculum so far so i decided to keep everything and just go up in the next level. i am making a few adjustments along the way. we will be keeping a history journal that will act as a time-line and keep literature art and copy work/narrations separate. in the past he had a journal for both and i found it to be over-flowing and unorganized by mid year. we will do an art assignment with liquid watercolor with every literature book we read but will be doing a time-line piece for each chapter in story of the world with colored pencil. he will continue with all about spelling, and finish up some grammar from last year from first language lessons. i will be including his grammar and writing lessons with his narrations as i found a lot of over-lapping in the past and would love to teach multiple topics at once if possible. i purchased the writer’s jungle from the brave writer and have yet to finish it but i am so excited of what i have read so far. i plan to introduce more writing as we get comfortable in the year and feel like we have a routine and this book will act as an excellent guide. he will also be learning cursive this year, which he requested. math will be done monday-wednesday at home and science will be done on thursday and friday when we head outdoors for the day. i plan to read aloud a ton and i look forward to days where we do just that and set the other stuff aside.
i have spent the last few months getting the school room ready, purchasing curriculum, reading and listening to audio books and podcast and i am so excited for this new adventure. we just have to wait one more week! we are all very eager to start. especially this one…

a few weeks back we had to head down to santa barbara to meet with june’s allergist. we finally did blood work with her in june and she tested pretty high on some allergens and was referred to an allergist. we have an annual zoo pass at our local zoo that also works at several other locations, santa barbara being one of them. the trip started a bit rough as june got car sick as we were driving through pismo. a quick change of clothes and a wipe bath we were back on the road in one stinky car. the allergist appointment was pretty routine and then we headed to whole foods for a picnic lunch. we ate at the zoo and then made our way through the exhibits. ivy was a little restless in the ergo so we took some time to let her stretch her legs and move a bit on the grass. that would be when we took the set of “awkward family photos” below. benny and june both got $20 to spend and we found a cute little gift shop near the california condors. june picked out the felted bag and benny a gorilla stuffed animal. the kids had so much fun and it was nice to have a family outing. we don’t get much of these with jeff working through the week and i on the weekends. aside from our camping trip this was our only trip out of the county this summer. we made the most of it despite the rough start. benny was lucky enough to get to feed the giraffe and as you can see june was not a fan. the kids loved the ant hill and i think the silverback gorillas was everyone’s favorite animal exhibit. unfortunately, no pictures where taken there. though the pictures of benny with the condor mural are some of my favorites. no silly posing there.
i am hoping the kids and i will head back soon.

last saturday we had some friends stop by for a playdate. on the way out they mentioned that they were headed to a concert in los osos and we should go. we had a few hours before it started but we had a lot to do if we wanted to make it in time. we had been gone most the day already. we quickly got everyone showered and dressed, a picnic packed and headed out the door. jeff was still at work. we had to stop at the bank to get cash as i never have it on me these days. we arrived a few minutes before the band came up on stage. our friends had saved us seats thankfully because the venue was packed. unfortunately about thirty seconds in i decided it was too loud for ivy so the girls and i exited the building and benny stayed with our friends. the good thing was now we were outside and i could get the stroller and all of our food. it was also nice because june needed some time to adjust from waking up from her nap she had taken on the thirty minute drive to the concert. we listened from the picnic tables and ate our yummy dinner. june got up to danced a few times. we ventured to the park after intermission and benny and his friends joined us. it just so happened to be “golden hour” and i captured some fun pictures of the kids. we headed back to listen to the end and to our surprise the band came out and performed the last song outside. it was so fun. if you are in the la area i would find out where these guys play because their music is so fun!

today we spent the morning and afternoon organizing the house and preparing for the school year. benny’s room needed some tlc and we finally started to finish what we started when moving his room downstairs. he will be getting a desk painted this week and my old desktop computer will be in there for him to do research on for school and maybe some emails to friends and family. he is pretty excited. i ordered most of our curriculum and we received it over the weekend. i want to make sure the home is inspiring and a place where the kids can learn and be creative. i added a few things for june to play with while benny and i need some one on one time. i bought an additional castle set to add to the one she already had and both kids are loving it. the bookshelf was added about a month ago and is holding all of our literature books, nature books, games and puzzles. we also have more books around the room. again, i really just want the kids to find the room to be inspiring and a place to get cozy in.
and a little dose of ivy. she is just as adorable as ever. each age is just as good as the previous and she is so sweet. i love these pj’s too.

as father’s day is quickly approaching i thought these photos would be appropriate. i took them several weeks ago as i was getting ready to take ivy’s three months photos. i know jeff will hate the angle of these on the top of his head, but how special to capture the bond he has between these two girls. he was so afraid of having daughters (the teenage years frighten him), but how could they possibly go wrong when you have this much love (i am hopeful)? not only is he the best dad for these two but he has been benny’s best bud for eight years now. we are lucky to have such a hard-working father/husband. happy father’s day jeff!

next year we will be starting some preschool curriculum for june. we plan on keeping it light and very relaxed. she turns three in september so she is still on the young side. she however, is always ready and eager to learn. i am really excited for the all about learning pre-reading program. i just know she is going to have so much fun learning letter recognitions and sounds. This little quote is from their website “The All About Reading Pre-reading program is designed for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Your student will enjoy the special games, crafts, and storytime read-alouds, and you will love the way your student effortlessly learns essential pre-reading skills”.
we have already skimmed the pages and can not wait to begin. first however we are going to have a fun-filled summer!
